Chips and computing equipment rebound; US job openings little changed
Chips, equipment and power stocks lead an intraday US rally, Coinbase rises nearly 9%, and Palantir and energy stocks fall; September JOLTS shows no clear hiring acceleration, while fresh catalysts for the largest stock moves remain unconfirmed.
News covers the period after November 2 at 10:04:43 through November 3 at 10:11:11 US Eastern time (EST, UTC-5). Additional checks covered public company disclosure pages, AMD’s earnings schedule and Japan’s holiday calendar. US and Canadian securities and futures figures are intraday snapshots retrieved November 3 at 11:10 EST; retrieval times are not necessarily trade times. Bitcoin uses the data provider’s one-day comparison interval. Global headlines, energy, geopolitics and crypto news coverage is incomplete; omission does not establish that no new event occurred. US and Japanese government bond yields lack confirmed observation dates and are not used here to assess today’s rate changes.
Today’s Market
US stocks are higher Tuesday morning. Semiconductor ETF SMH rises 2.9%, Nasdaq 100 ETF QQQ gains 1.0%, S&P 500 ETF VOO adds 0.5%, and Magnificent Seven ETF MAGS gains 0.6%. Chips, computing equipment and power companies are stronger, while energy stocks and Canadian large-cap ETF XIU weaken. The VIX falls 3.5% to 20.41, but long-duration Treasury ETF TLT drops 0.5% and the dollar index rises 0.1% to 101.82. These prices do not establish that broadly easing interest-rate pressure is driving the equity rebound. SMH, QQQ, VOO, MAGS, VIX, TLT, dollar index.
The rebound has yet to reverse recent losses: QQQ is down 4.7% over five trading days and SMH is down 6.3%. Among the sharpest divergences, Coinbase gains 8.95% and Vertiv rises 5.92%, while Palantir falls 2.79% and Alphabet is nearly flat. Fresh company catalysts remain unconfirmed, and today’s US job openings release alone cannot explain those differences. Coinbase, Vertiv, Palantir, Alphabet.
The Main Stories
Chips, equipment and power stocks rise together; better earnings expectations need evidence
AMD gains 5.41%, Nvidia rises 3.13%, Broadcom adds 3.79%, Arm gains 3.80%, and TSMC rises 2.19%, showing gains across several chip companies. Yet AMD is still down 12.17% over five trading days. Intel, up 2.43% today, remains down 34.47% over that period. A single day’s gain does not establish that earlier operating concerns have been resolved. AMD, Nvidia, Broadcom, Arm, TSMC, Intel.
In equipment and power, Dell rises 4.42%, Vistra gains 5.39%, Constellation Energy adds 3.01%, and NRG rises 3.94%. Vertiv’s five-day gain of 13.89% contrasts with losses at most chip companies over the same period. My reading is that prices still show substantial differences in how the market assesses equipment, power and chip businesses. Attributing those differences to better orders or profits requires fresh operating disclosures. Platforms and software are also mixed: Microsoft gains 1.83% and Meta rises 2.40%, while Alphabet adds just 0.05% and Palantir declines. Dell, Vistra, Constellation, NRG, Microsoft, Meta.
The supplementary checks have not confirmed a fresh announcement or guidance change sufficient to explain AMD’s and Vertiv’s gains or Palantir’s decline. AMD’s official schedule places its third-quarter earnings release after the November 3 market close, with a call at 17:00 ET. The morning gain therefore cannot be described as a reaction to already released quarterly results. Tonight’s disclosures on data-center demand and subsequent guidance will provide new evidence for assessing earnings. AMD earnings schedule, Vertiv announcements, Palantir announcements.
September US job openings at 7.5 million, without a clear acceleration in hiring
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its September Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) on November 3 at 10:00 ET. Seasonally adjusted openings were 7.5 million, with an openings rate of 4.5%; hires were 5.4 million, with a hiring rate of 3.4%; and total separations were 5.3 million, with a rate of 3.3%. All were little changed from the previous month. Quits rose to 3.4 million, with a quits rate of about 2.1%. August openings, hires and total separations were revised up by 111,000, 79,000 and 105,000, respectively, to 7.2 million, 5.3 million and 5.2 million. Monthly comparisons should use those revised figures. BLS release.
Openings measure employers’ unfilled demand for workers, while hires are closer to completed hiring activity. My reading is that the release shows neither a sudden collapse in labor demand nor a clear acceleration in hiring. Higher quits merit attention, but alone do not establish renewed wage pressure. There is no reliable consensus estimate here to support a claim that the figures beat or missed expectations. The price snapshot follows the release, but without a price path around the announcement, neither the tech rally nor TLT’s decline can be attributed directly to JOLTS.
Coinbase rises nearly 9%, outpacing bitcoin alongside other crypto-linked shares
Bitcoin trades around $77,472, up 1.0% over the provider’s one-day interval. Coinbase rises 8.95% and Strategy gains 5.08%. The equities’ gains are much larger, but bitcoin’s comparison interval differs from the US stock-market session, so the gap cannot be read as a fixed multiple relationship. Coinbase remains down 6.78% over five trading days, while bitcoin is down 4.1%; today’s gains have not erased the recent decline. Bitcoin, Coinbase, Strategy.
Trading-platform revenue can depend on transaction volumes and product use, and related equities have their respective operating and financing factors. Bitcoin’s rise alone cannot explain Coinbase’s entire gain of nearly 9%. A corresponding fresh company, regulatory or ETF-flow catalyst remains unconfirmed; the stock rebound is not evidence that those factors have improved. Coinbase announcements.

- Continuous WTI futures trade at $95.70 a barrel, down 0.8% for the day and 4.2% over five trading days. ExxonMobil falls 1.13% and Chevron drops 0.83%. Their direction is consistent with lower oil prices potentially weighing on upstream revenue expectations, but a fresh supply or demand catalyst remains unconfirmed. The move does not establish that transport or supply risks have been resolved. Continuous futures are neither spot prices nor settlement prices. WTI, ExxonMobil, Chevron.
- Continuous copper futures fall 2.3%, Mosaic drops 3.10%, Nutrien loses 0.77%, CF Industries declines 0.99%, and XIU falls 0.6%, diverging from technology stocks. Copper and fertilizers have different demand and supply conditions; there is no fresh evidence here sufficient to attribute their moves to one common shock. Continuous gold and silver futures also weaken, but contract-roll effects have not been checked, so their changes are not reported as daily spot-price declines. Copper futures, Mosaic, Nutrien, CF, XIU.
- Japan is closed for Culture Day on November 3. The cached Nikkei 225 one-day change cannot be treated as today’s Japanese equity response. USD/JPY is around 158.44, up 0.4%, indicating a weaker yen against the dollar over that comparison interval. JPX holiday calendar, USD/JPY.
- OpenAI announced internal-system security testing with Cathedral and higher bug bounties. Reward-range midpoints for medium, high and critical vulnerabilities increased more than fourfold on average. Critical findings in core products can earn up to $30,000, while exceptionally severe findings can receive about $172,000 including bonuses. Both official pages are dated November 2 without publication times, so their inclusion after the news window’s starting point cannot be confirmed. These are testing and incentive arrangements; neither a quantifiable revenue impact nor a link to today’s technology-stock moves has been established. Security-testing plan, bounty changes.
What to Watch Next
- AMD’s earnings after the November 3 close and its 17:00 ET call: whether data-center revenue, deliveries and subsequent guidance support today’s gain. Better operating disclosures would provide evidence behind the chip rebound; weaker expectations would call the durability of the morning rally into question. Official schedule.
- The November 3 US close and subsequent disclosures: whether strength in equipment, power and chips persists, and whether verifiable fresh catalysts emerge for Coinbase and Palantir. Closing prices can confirm whether the day’s moves last, while orders, earnings or regulatory evidence would help explain them.
